Training Begins in 2010

The New Year (and a new decade) has just begun and the break from Jitsu over the holiday period is almost over.

The city centre club is the first back to training and this begins at 7 PM on Monday 4th January.  As ever beginners are welcome at all sessions as are people who maybe haven't trained in a while.  If there are any University club students (from York or elsewhere) wanting to get in a bit of extra training before term starts then you are also welcome to come along to the sessions and get a head start on the coming term's training.

YTJC training at University Club (Monday 23/11/2009)

Sensei Millard is unable to teach the YTJC session on Monday the 23rd November 2009.  Arrangements have kindly been made by the University of York Jitsu Club to allow students to train with them at their session.

Training times are the same but students should make their way to the University of York Sports Centre (pay at the desk) rather than St. Olave's School.

YTJC sessions will return to the normal venue from Friday the 27th.

Bootham - Road Closure

From Monday the 2nd November 2009, roadworks will be carried out on Bootham for three weeks from 6.30 PM each evening.  This will effectively preclude people from being able to park at St. Peter's School for the duration.

York Town Jitsu club will still be running sessions so please ensure that you find suitable parking arrangements should you require them and that you account for any increase in journey time.

YTJC - Sticks Session

This Friday (18th September 2009) is the final in the  YTJC series of focus sessions.  Jiu Jitsu is primarily an unarmed art, but for this session the focus will be shifted towards kobudo and in particular the use of sticks.  The sticks will range from the long bo staff right down to yawara or kubotan length sticks.  As well as looking at using the sticks as weapons we'll also be looking at using them for improving other areas of training around coordination and timing as well as the principles of leverage.

YTJC - Judo Focus Session

This Monday (14th September 2009) sees the third in a series of four focus sessions and will focus on Judo techniques.  Judo was originally developed from Jiu Jitsu and is based upon a competitive system rather than a combative system of fighting.  Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu's roots have a clear influence from Kodokan Judo and so there should be something in this session for all Jitsuka.

This sesssion will be taken by guest instructor Sensei Pete Dodd from the University of York Jiu Jitsu club.

YTJC - Kata Session

Following on from Monday's Applied Techniques focus session the second session in the series is Kata and will take place this Friday 11th September 2009.  Kata is a traditional form of training in Japanese martial arts but does not form a particularly large part of the Shorinji Kan syllabus.  This session will be an opportunity to learn or refresh some of the syllabus kata as well as pick up some non-syllabus kata too.  This will include some weapons kata as well as unarmed forms.

YTJC - Applied Techniques

Monday the 7th of September 2009 sees the first of our four focus sessions coming to the YTJC dojo.  Sensei Millard will be taking the session which proves to be an interesting look at some practical aspects of Jiu Jitsu from a more walking the streets kind of view.

What sorts of challenges might you face when you're forced to use Jiu Jitsu techniques for real?  What happens when you use techniques outside the dojo and what opportunities does this reveal?  Is Jiu Jitsu really any good for self defence?

A Tweet for YorkJitsu

If you use Twitter you can now benefit from this with YorkJitsu.  The site now has information about the Twitter account for the town club and details about the hash tags for the town club and the university club.  If you've no idea what Twitter is and even if you don't currently use it, please have a read of the Twitter page as it will give you an idea of what we're using it for and you don't have to have a Twitter account to make use of our Twitter feeds.

Temporary summer venue change for YTJC

During the summer the normal training venue for YTJC (St. Olave's School off Bootham) is being closed for building work.  From July to September the club will therefore be relocating.  Since the University club doesn't train over the summer months, YTJC has taken up the Monday evening slot at the University of York Sports Centre.
