Sensei Stephen Millard

Ikkyu (Acting Primary Trainer)

Sensei Millard began his studies of Jiu Jitsu at the University of York in 1993. As well as being heavily involved with the University of York Jiu Jitsu Club (UoYJJC), he has been training and teaching at YTJC since the very first session. He has been the lead instructor at YTJC since September 2003.

Sensei Millard has studied a variety of other martial arts as well as Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu, including Karate, Judo, Aikido and Tae Kwon Do with instructors from across the UK. He is also one of a handful of people qualified to teach Defendo – a “British Jiu Jitsu” fighting system.

As well as continuing to broaden his martial knowledge Sensei Millard has a passion for stretching and improving his coaching knowledge to deliver a high quality student experience. This is reflected widely outside the dojo through the coaching related courses undertaken (see below) and through his day job working with an organisation focussed on improving Higher Education in the UK.

Sensei Millard has also authored coaching articles on teaching Jiu Jitsu for Sports Coach UK's* coaching magazines.

* Sports Coach UK is the national sports coaches organisation for the UK.

Finally, as well as teaching classes at York Jitsu Club and assisting at the University of York Jiu Jitsu Club classes, he is also active within other groups. He is an avid supporter of children in Jiu Jitsu through his work with The Jitsu Foundation's sub division – The Junior Jitsu Foundation (TJJF). He is the author of the course for the organisation's juniors instructor / town club development course*. Within York he works closely with the local council and has served as the central point of contact for the North zone of York's Community Sports Network – Active York.
