Breakfalling

Jiu Jitsu involves a wide range of techniques, and many of these are based on throwing your opponent to the ground. Before training in throwing it is essential that a person should learn how to fall safely - i.e. how to 'break' their fall.

Breakfalling in Jiu Jitsu encompasses a wide range of specialised techniques (ukemi waza) for developing safe falling.  This is learnt on an individual basis, but often demonstrations are performed in a group.

At almost every session a student of Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu will have some time allocated explicitly for the study of breakfalling and this has lead to it the style being known for the quality of its falling.

As well as learning the myriad of different falling techniques, it is also useful to understand the fundamental principles at work behind the techniques.
