YTJC - Applied Techniques

Monday the 7th of September 2009 sees the first of our four focus sessions coming to the YTJC dojo.  Sensei Millard will be taking the session which proves to be an interesting look at some practical aspects of Jiu Jitsu from a more walking the streets kind of view.

What sorts of challenges might you face when you're forced to use Jiu Jitsu techniques for real?  What happens when you use techniques outside the dojo and what opportunities does this reveal?  Is Jiu Jitsu really any good for self defence?

The session will not be the usual look at the 'more self defence techniques of Jiu Jitsu', but as the title suggests a look at the application of techniques in a real life situation and an examination of the benefits and limitations of the dojo environment versus the world outside.

If you plan to attend this session (which we very much hope that you do), please don't pack your kit bag as you might normally ... you'll need to bring some different things this time around.

What to wear?

You won't need your gi or your belt for this session.  Please just come along in "normal clothes".  It would be useful to come in something you can still move freely in and you don't mind getting a bit stretched, but something you're more likely to wear outside of the dojo than a gi.  Please also make sure that whatever you wear has no sharp protrusions (e.g. large metal buckles on belts).

Please also bring some footwear suitable for wearing in the school hall (e.g. trainers), and if you have one a zip top jacket / top.

What else do I need?

Please bring along the sorts of things you normally carry with you day to day.  This could include things like your house keys, wallet / purse, watch, necklace, school tie, coins, pen, tissues, mobile phone, hand bag / man bag, book / magazine, newspaper, etc.  Please don't bring one of everything, just a few things that you might carry with you most days.

If one of the things you have isn't a bag then please bring something to keep your bric-a-brac in so that it does not get lost.

We hope you can join us for this first focus session.  Whilst traditional dojo dress will not apply, the rules of the dojo will persist to ensure everyone trains safely through the evening.  Everyone should come away from this session with a new perspective on their Jiu Jitsu.
