Weapons of Jiu Jitsu: Swords
In the modern world it is not common (at least not in the UK) to encounter someone armed with
a sword. This is a thankful state of affairs! However through historic tradition jitsuka are
trained in the basics of sword techniques or Ken Waza.
Overview
A sword is a weapon with a long blade used for one or a combination of thrusting, slashing and
bludgeoning of an opponent. Swords are typically made of metal, but it is possible to get swords
made from other materials - the most common being wooden swords used in training.
The blade of the sword is attached to a handle that can be of single or double handed length
(depending upon the type/style), usually with some sort of guard to stop the hand(s) slipping onto
the blade.
The Japanese have always been reknowned for both their swordsmanship and their sword crafting
expertise.
The various uses of a Japanese blade are covered by a variety of martial arts including arts such as
Iai Do (the art of drawing the sword), Ken Do (the way of the sword), and Ken Jitsu
(the art of the sword).
Swords In Jiu Jitsu
The Samurai roots of Jiu Jitsu mean that the sword has a very special place in a jitsuka's training.
It is difficult to really bring much sword work into Jiu Jitsu as there is simply so much to learn to
become truly proficient with such a weapon. In fact many jitsuka with a particular interest seek
instructors in the martial arts to take their studies further.
In essence though jitsu is an unarmed martial form and it is the defence from the sword that is key.
However in order to learn how to defend against the sword it is requisite that some basic sword forms
are learnt (to defend from).
