Weapons of Jiu Jitsu: Swords - Attacks
There are many types of attack that can be made with a sword. Some of the more common ones
encountered in Jiu Jitsu are described below.
The strike begins in a normal chudan no kamae stance.
The leading foot is drawn back to a cat stance (necho dachi) - with roughly 90% weight on
back foot, 10% on front foot, back knee bent slightly, and front foot up on the ball of the foot.
The sword is taken directly back over the head so that it points vertically down. Then as
stepping back to the initial stance, the sword is swung directly down over the head at the target.
On the strike the tip of the sword should ideally not drop below the horizontal.
The strike begins in a normal chudan no kamae stance. The arms are drawn in slightly, with the kashira
(the butt of the hilt) towards the jitsuka's hara. From there push hard off the back foot and let the
front foot slide smoothly over the floor. At the same time both arms extend driving a little body weight
and shoulder into the thrust.
