Weapons of Jiu Jitsu

Jiu jitsu was developed by the Samurai to allow them to defend themselves should they be disarmed in battle. To this end the vast majority of techniques are performed unarmed. However they same cannot always be said of one's opponent.

Armed attacks are thus quite common in jiu jitsu, and so some understanding of both the offensive and defensive techniques involving weapons is required. Additionally some weapons lend themselves to other techniques and these tend to be studied to a somewhat greater length. For example batons are particularly good as levers for locking techniques, and a number of throws are derived directly from sword techniques.

There are several categories of weaponry that are commonly encountered in the jiu jitsu dojo, and each is discussed in a little more detail in its own section. It should be noted that many weapon techniques can be further adapted for more unusual weapons. A baseball bat for example may open itself to baton or sword techniques depending upon how it is swung.

  • Bottles are the first weapon you learn to defend yourself against in jitsu
  • Knives are a common weapon, and every jitsuka must learn to defend themselves from such attacks
  • Chains have a good range and lend themselves to some of the more spectacular defences in jitsu
  • Sticks are fairly common weapons and range from only a few inches to several feet long
  • Swords are not common in today's society, but defences from them can be applied to other attacks
