Personal Etiquette
Personal etiquette is very important in Jiu Jitsu. The way in which jitsuka conduct themselves can often make the
difference both inside the dojo and outside the dojo. For example, a jitsuka should never go looking for a fight.
Fighting should always be a last resort - but when called upon a jitsuka should be able to rise to the challenge.
Japanese culture is traditionally a very polite one and one in which personal boundaries are very important. Jitsu
is odd in that it breaks that in many ways as such close contact is required.
In training this means that jitsuka have to get very close to one another, and further more a training partner may
then be subject to a certain amount of pain and discomfort in what can be a very dangerous environment. This means
that jitsuka must quickly build up a trust with their fellow students. Hence it is also very important that jitsuka
treat one another with a certain amount of respect. This of course extends to the instructor and student
relationship as well.
The jistuka must therefore take care to bow at the appropriate times, and to present
themselves in an affable manner - good personal hygiene, clean uniform, friendly and honest manner, etc.
