Breakfalling: Sideways

The vast majority of throwing techniques employed in jiu jitsu cause the jitsuka thrown to fall onto their side (at least if they know how to fall). Therefore the side breakfalls are possibly the most important falls to learn for an extended jitsu career.

  • Rolling Sideways Falls

  • Rotating & Dropping Falls
    • Peg Leg - a straight legged fall using a person on all fours as a base of rotation
    • Over the Belt - a straight legged fall using a standing person's belt as a base of rotation

  • Vertical Side Falls
    • Kick Up & Drop - jumping bodily up into the air and falling on your side
