Japanese martial arts are intrinsically linked with the Japanese way of life and with the rich culture of Japan's feudal era. Because of this the way in which students of Japanese martial arts are expected to conduct themselves is also based to an extent upon this histroic Japanese culture.

This may initially seem like a waste of time to many people, but the rules and etiquette for Japanese martial arts add an element of depth and in many cases can serve a very practical purpose such as helping a student maintain focus, or as a safeguard for a student's safety.

The concept and imprtance of bowing is discussed in the first section and the more general approach to personal conduct is discussed in the second section.
