Taster Session at Burnholme Community College

Burnholme Community CollegeBurnholme Community College in partnership with the City of York Council's Sport & Active Leisure Department are currently running a series of martial arts classes for a group of their students.  Instructors from some of York's top martial arts clubs have been invited to teach the group a few elements of their art.

On Monday the 19th of January 2009 Sensei Stephen Millard of YTJC assisted by members of YTJC and UoYJJC visited Burnholme to teach the students a little bit about Jiu Jitsu.

With only an hour to get across the principles, the introduction and warm-up were son out of the way and the class began with some exercises to help build trust between the students.  From there on in the class moved onto some restraint releases and to the basics of ukemi (falling safely).  The teaching finished with a defence against an armed attacker - in this particular case armed with a plastic bottle.

In the last few minutes the students were treated to a demonstration of more advanced techniques including ukemi, throwing, wrist locks and pressure point techniques.

In all the experience appears to have been rewarding for both sides and YTJC would like to thank UoYJJC for the loan of their mats allowing this class to take place and Ellie Hutchinson from the City of York Council for making all of the arrangements.
